ESCAPE TO ANTIGUA, GUATEMALA, CENTRAL AMERICA

ImageWhat makes people run away from their lives and move elsewhere is a question I have asked myself in the past. More so, how this affects our little community down here in Antigua is; why do they chose this part of the world, this particular region, and most exactly, why this town instead of the towns around or other areas of this Country?

Image

For starters; why this part of the world? Well, for most people, including myself, it had to do with the economic advantages it could offer any individual who thinks about improving a social or quality status in their lives. While this is true, undeniably, and most people enjoy the perks of living in this region of the world for this reason alone. Your dollar power is 3 times greater or more or less depending on assets you wish to purchase. One aspect I enjoy is domestic service. $10 usd per day offers you a full service top to bottom cooking cleaning windows and drapes. Insurance, home taxes, and the advantages of travelling all over the region is another bonus about the central American region. Fresh produce in local markets. All these reasons we all dig.

Image

Guatemala has a terrific double port entry for goods and supplies (a port on both the east and west coasts). Logistically quality improvements were made with previous administrations on roads and ports and these modifications will push Guatemala into the 21st century as a leader, one of the strongest economies, and offer them a very senior seat in the Americas. If Guatemala demonstrates that it is a sole economic power base with focus on liberties and less social and policy making influence from anywhere else in the world, it would exceed any expectations that currently hinder their future growth rates. The most important, for aspects about this land however, are the touristic attractions, ecological and economic opportunities, multiple biospheres, natural seismic threats of eruptions or catastrophic disasters, and the cultural threats that begun as a civil war and is still currently close to a failed government state threshold due to political corruption and a war on drugs that continues to cause more crime and deaths and instability than what it is designed to counter. The good and bad that continue to exist here in Guatemala is a juxtaposition of both the most beautiful and the most ugly. The people can be the most generous and some who are the most dreaded. We interact with them daily. They sell us bad food, cut corners, pollute the countrysides, contaminate waters, poison rivers and streams, and kidnap and extort innocents. This makes Guatemala the most beautiful fucked up country to live in, in the region.

Image

Like a NSA satellite zooming in with pinpoint accuracy, we are now looking into the Sacatepequez region, focusing on Antigua. Now why here? It can be simple to consider. Some 65 years ago some people found a lazy town, detested by the who’s who of Guatemala, till this day many of the families that existed back then still refuse to have an investment home or plantation in or around the area. Some foreigners however, they felt different. They were Canadians and Americans. Mostly adventurous types. They bought homes for next to nothing and made pilgrimages to visit and escape their lives in the north; as some people did with fishing camps and African safaris. Over the years they brought friends down who also invested and gradually it grew to what we have today. We have a very international flavored town, rich in tradition, captured a most unexpected future vision and modeled itself unlike any other Guatemalan town. In fact, a town like this would be replicated based on the success it has but no other town wishes to replicate the success. Most towns are very content without being a touristic town, extremely content in keeping tourism numbers down, blaming tourist for drug trades or alcohol abuses which are home grown in nature. Antigua has a rather stable water source, electricity, Internet, and other services, which do not go out constantly, compared to other towns around Guatemala. However, Antigua rates high in tourism destinations because of all the items listed above. It is a travel central hub. Of 2,000,000 visitors to Guatemala their place of entry and departure may very well be La Capital, or Guatemala City, but this is only to say hello and goodbye. Like a sailor in the port, they do not stay very long making Antigua the travel Mecca of the country and other regions all taking back seat to the Antigua region. I suppose it was the vision of 65 years ago when some people saw 9 square blocks surrounded by riveting volcano views, vista hermosas, historic architecture, and a very polite society that gradually improved Antigua over any other travel region of the country. Retulaleu, it has one of the most beautiful Palm lined streets and makes a perfect postcard, but the people who have ran the muni there for the past 65 years had no taste, nor vision, and it may be the capital del mundo in their eyes, for others it is a dogs breakfast. Taxisco, Iztapa, or any any town close to Monterrico, a favored travel destiny and they both fall short on making a significant break through in keeping the streets and beaches clean. Over the past 20 years a great influence has been generated in the area but with all the investment and taxes they generate they still lack proper schooling, focus on keeping the area clean, and have wide spread corruption and theft of tourists that shoots itself in the foot. Rio Dulce, now there is a cool place to be. They have made a terrific place of the Rio. I am sure it has its own challenges. Atitlan is the most beautiful lake in the world and the people around the lake are lost in corruption, and stupidity, and they allow for the continued pollution of the most beautiful lake in the world. I repeat, the most beautiful lake in the world… and it is mindlessly being polluted.

Image

Antigua brought together some great attributes, it kept a focus on architecture, it put in place some laws that have been neglected religiously because they do not take in some commonsense. Corruption is systemic in most levels of the municipality except, well, currently, there is no municipality. They consistently send squads of police and municipal workers or tax people to extort bars on Friday and Saturday nights at peek hours … where this investigation could be performed on Saturday mornings but this is another abuse that takes place headed up by religious people who are trying to close down the town to back packers and wish only for teetotalers. This is the most whacked of the bunch and their generation is growing older and running out of steam. This is not to say they are not seriously well backed financially and at the highest levels of the whose-who in town. They are. They even have a powerful allies within the international community that runs counter logical especially seeing they are trying to run policy that goes against freedoms and liberties. But this is the way politics work and your enemies enemy becomes your friend.

Image

There are great moments enjoyed in Antigua 7 days a week. At the very least, when you walk into a small bar when there is no tourism, poor your soul out across the counter, run into the town celebrities like Brendan, Toto, a Don Tono, Jesse, or yours-truly, you hear about the rumors or chisme on any of us, you get some highs of popular stories like Ecofiltro or a video that went viral. Or who is sleeping with whom and did you hear what happened with this bar owner or another. These resort town stories will only carry forward for as long as the oldest person stands. I am sad to see the Walter Whites and the Heenan’s move on. Generations are lost without the Johnston’s. I would tip my hat to those who could tell me how these people lived, the chismes… as a person who is not a fan of these loose lips, I would cherish to know how and what they did. I figure we are doing pretty much of what they use to do. I am positive we are. They were the foreplay to our pursuits today and we carry on they way they did too. We are “them” personified. Of course we are different, but we are much the same as we made our way here in the same desire as they led the course. They beat the path, for us to come in more comfort because they made it so for us.

Image

Now we are here. Let our voices be heard. Make noise for less pollution in town. Make sure our trash becomes limited with recycling and not dumped just outside of town. Make our water the best in the world. Demand leaders with a future vision, accountable. We are the place that tourist seek to go to from all over the world and they can see the regional beauty, the affordable prices, the fantastic places to hang out, and we are the envy of 11,000,000 people in this country. Ask any person from any town where they would love to live or own a house, their answer is 99% Antigua. Lets invite them to our little how town. But ONLY if they make it a better place to be.

Business made difficult by Guate Lawmakers is bad for society

This is an opinion piece on doing business in Guatemala.  This isn’t a piece about how I hate Guatemala, or that the people here are stupid:  Quite the contrary.  The people are smart, and it is a wonderful country.  But the politicians are stupid, those who have boots on the ground, who work for the ministers in power who make the decisions, have been pinned under thumbs for generations, and the country is being controlled by outside interests that do not allow it to mature and make the most of its potential.

The other day I did something I have not done in many years with a newborn client from the United States we will call, Bob from Accounting, or just plain Bob.  It was a straightforward day; go to the city, buy a car, get a cell phone, a little bit of shopping, return to Antigua.

We started with the car.  We arrived in the city around 11am and went directly to a car lot referred to us by a mutual client of ours.  The lot is a reputable lot in Z15, referred to us from a noble family here in Guatemala.  It took us a whole 15 minutes to review the car, assess the maintenance of the vehicle, and Bob decided that the previous owners kept it in excellent condition and would be worthy of the purchase.  A test drive was undertaken.  It was approved.  Bob did not wish for an inspection, the understanding of no warranty acknowledged; giddy-up!

So far so good right?   Next step was the purchase.  The car company requested we pay with a certified cheque.  We asked if we could pay CASH.  By all means they told us:  NO.  Now please understand, Bob had been pulling cash from the ATM machines all over Antigua to pull together 25,000 Q (or  $3,000 usd give or take the funds in his pockets etc.) because cash is king.  The total purchase price was 25,000 Q.  So having no choice, we set off to a bank to have them issue Bob a certified cheque so we could purchase the car.

We arrived at BAC (Banco American Central) in Z15, stroll up to a teller for a quick transaction, and are informed, NO.   Bob, ready to make a purchase of a vehicle, is getting gringo already.  We have cash; we just need to convert it to a cheque.  We are never informed why, but the request is not possible.  We are then informed he needs a bank account.  So he pulls out his passport, several of his cards, and asks to create an account.  NO.  He is a foreigner and cannot open an account in Guatemala (now this is not true, many foreigners have accounts in the Antigua regions, especially with BAC.)  Fine, I am a resident, I say I will co-sign the account, so he can open the account, deposit the funds, issue the cheque, and we will close it the following day.  NO.  We can make the deposit, but the funds will have to be retained in the account for 7 days.  WTF???  I do not mean to curse, but why in the world is Bob not able to purchase a car with cash in the first place, not a great deal of an amount, why can we not convert the little amount of cash we have to a cheque, and then move it over to the car company.

What retarded (and by no means do I mean this in a derogatory snipe to individuals who are challenged in any sense, or to consider myself Anne Coulter) individual came up with this plan in any level in any country and said, OH YES, THIS IS POSITIVELY A GREAT IDEA AND WILL FORWARD OUR PEOPLE TRIUMPHANTLY.

We repeated this push forward multiple times, suckers for punishment, gringo blood boiling, because in Bob’s reasoning, Citi-Bank will rubber stamp our request because, they are an American Bank and will see-through the crap of logic we have encountered.  NOPE.  They were just as willing and without explanation, because none is needed of course, as to why cash cannot be converted to a cheque.  This went on all afternoon.  Western Union, DITTO.

We finally had a break, after beating the bushes, that the owner of the car company would accept a deposit directly into their bank account.  WTF!  It was by then a 4 or 5 pm timeframe and we still had some items to purchase outside of the phone, traffic was setting in, and we had to get to TIGO for a phone in Z10, because of logistics, we still had to sign papers… omfg… this took another hour.

We sat around to find out the car company didn’t have all the papers and asked if we would be willing to come back!  Not the most brilliant customer service experience and for a simple matter and a lack of respect towards Bob who made a quick decision to purchase a car, not having another mechanic inspect the car, demonstrating good faith, to then to be bullied into getting an impossible payment arranged, to then be told, oh, hey why don’t you just put the cash into our account, and if that isn’t good enough, sit on your asses for an hour until we tell you we don’t have the papers and they wont be arriving today.  In the end, Bob was able to drive the car off the lot.

We made our way down to TIGO next.  Oakland Mall.  Bob was impressed by the grandeur and the style, and the cleanliness of the place.  There was a good hustle-bustle going on in the mall, seemed as if people were feeling good about the economy.  It has been some years since I had witnessed this normalcy again in peoples shopping habits, bags were filled with items that people really did not need.

We strolled into TIGO, Bob looked at the newest Samsung Galaxy II phones with cappuccino making abilities, ordered two of them.  I had thought to myself, this is what Guatemala needs; it needs people to come from other countries, fall in love with Guate-Linda, and buy things locally to spur the regional growth that has been lacking for many years.  We sit down with our reps, great young guys, forward thinking, bilingual (KUDDOS TO THEM AND TIGO) and we hit a snag. Since Bob is a Gringo (okay they said foreigner) he needs to SHOW them his credit statement online.  WTF?  For one thing, Bob just needed to slip 100q and say they reviewed his online statement; nobody would ever be the wiser. The rep was not required to take a photo, have a copy or a receipt, just witness the page. Bob agrees and shows him one account where the kid falls off the chair with the amount of Zeros on the balance sheet. There is the snag, MasterCard wasn’t working that day within the Tigo systems so they asked if he had another card to use.  Why yes, out comes the Visa card, but wait, Bob has problems logging in. Guess what.  We cannot grant you two phones today, get one and come back in three days and you can reapply for another phone at that time!

Now here is the rub.  Regardless of the value, Bob cannot make a car purchase (even though we did, the dynamics were against us).  Now these laws are created primarily against Drug-Trafficking.  Yet, it is like gun laws, laundering laws, and drug trade laws, they do not, have never, and will never work.  All they do is create problems for ordinary people to do normal things in life.  These laws are created by really dumb people.  They are concocted by idiots, who are extremely unintelligent, and lack common sense, we have names for them and that name is a bureaucrat.  I have never met anybody who said, I am a criminal, I will abide by the law.  (I have never actually met a criminal and had this conversation).  So instead of enacting laws that make it easier to live, they create laws that make it mostly impossible for people to get through in life in a simple manner, to accommodate instead of punish.

Bob runs a company somewhere, has some cash in his pockets, wishes to just purchase a Car and a couple of Cell phones.  Instead, he is met day one with a very difficult pursuit of logistics. This isn’t a necessary pitfall.  It is man made, created by people who are puppets for other stupid people.

Guatemala is better than this.  In today’s world, we are allowing the inmates to run the society, and if by referring to politicians as criminals, I would resist to call them that.   I believe criminals are extremely smart and proficient people.  It is a shame when the company is wrong, delays a client, creates obstacles for them because it suits the company better, that more people should say to these companies, FUCK YOU.  I will not stand for this abusive treatment.  I do not think if I choose to spend my money for a product or service, my resources with any company that they should expect for me to lose my time for their convenience.

The car company should have acted intelligently in the first place.  You like OUR car?  You waive an INSPECTION?  Why Mr. Bob, step this way, thank you for your money, here are the papers, and in 1 hour we should have been out of the lot on to our next investment.  Hello Mr. Bob, you want 2 phones?  Why not 3!  Well, our system is messed up with MasterCard today, but we have a service where we can ensure you get your second phone today.  Why, we are not a stupid company, we want your business, not only that, we will strive to get all your business because we care about you.  And NO, we need not look at your personal statements, your private transactions, give us your card, we can credit report you quickly, painlessly, and get you on your way with the products and services you want, we are after all, an INTERNATIONAL company and pride ourselves in streamlining our business to offer you services you will enjoy.

I do not write this asking for a utopian dream.  This blog helps me to remember about where we came from in the past.  How we use to work, earn our money, and go to the store and purchase bread and milk.  The people who control institutions and governments, they are not like you and me.  They avoid reason and commonsense and never think of the betterment of man.  These people cower in the face of adversity and stand not in defiance, but bow in the amusement of others, who have no idea what life is like in a better world.

Bob is one example of many who are herded into lines here in Guatemala and asked to perform really outrages tasks on a daily basis.  The triplicate demands and photocopies of endless documents, ornatos, cedulas, DPIs, go to this office, pay at the next, back in line, stamp it on the 4th floor, come back here.  The logistical acrobatics the common people and visitors to Guatemala are asked to perform are geared to prevent misuse.  The funny thing is, it creates more holes in the system and further abuse.  It costs the government.  It costs businesses.  It makes living here more difficult and less enjoyable that people get fed up and want to find a better place to live.

As I began this article I told you this was not an article against Guatemala.  It is a beautiful country coast to coast.  The good people who are here, they are amongst the best people I have met in my life, even some of those whom I do not see any longer, I hold them dear to me in my heart.  I see they are tired of this abusive stupidity.  NITs.  Ornatos.  Duplicate and triplicate requirements that have existed for generations and bear no relevance. These processes and systematic bureaucratic atrocities is a major cost to the economy and a better life potential for citizens, the poor, and the well to do.  Lets face it, Narcos will always find a way around the system, so stop putting in place structures that only impede the good and the honest.

The Design Center – Zona Viva – Guatemala City – Central America

Design Center Guatemala
One Stop Home Shopping Experience

Now if you were to ask me… “Peter Bamboo… where do I go to find a whole bunch of really cool shops, with nifty things, design concepts, and professional capabilities to redesign my home,” I would tell you … DESIGN CENTER GUATEMALA. This place has many really interesting stores to visit, all very qualified for their product offerings, showroom inventory, and friendly staff.

Though this blog/ write up is mainly designed for the folks in Antigua, Sacatepequz, Guatemala… and more specifically those who are not familiar with the vast offerings Guatemala City provides to high ended minded consumers, this is also a reminder to the good folks in and around Guatemala to revisit a very beautiful Center to assist in the redesign of their abodes.

The past few years have been turbulent to say the least. Many individuals have ignored changes to their main houses because of economic uncertainty. People are finally starting to breath easier, a positive feeling is in the air and if you are considering a change in your home/ cottage/ beach resort; a visit to the design center will certainly help you figure out the missing touches you need to revitalize the look and feel you want.

IN SITU. My favorite store is “In Situ!” Eric Ledoigt/ Roberto Santa Cruz and team have a great vibe and man do

they know how to design. As they put it, “It’s a design company, dedicated to the setting and decoration of interiors, as well as to the development of innovative products, which join projects of remodeling houses, recreation houses, buildings, hotels, restaurants and others.”

So there is a bit of a taste of the new and the old and certainly of the abstract. “In Situ” offers the eclectic taste and is in line with a modern lean. It maintains comfort and tries to stray away from the conventional. You have seen their work in many places in Guatemala… the new “La Casbah” for instance. Visit their website at www.insitu-gt.com or visit their social network page at www.facebook.com/pages/Insitu-Guatemala. You will see images of past work and view their in-store layout prior to visiting in person.

CASA DIEZ. Another place to drop by is Casa Diez. You will be greeted by Monica Quan who is in her own right an Architecture graduate. Casa Diez was created by 10 separate franchises in Guatemala who specialize in separate niche markets but have combined their resources to provide buyers a one stop shop to pick up all their requirements under one roof. What is further note-worthy is there is now 14 different companies (Casa 14 in other words) so there are even more choices inside the store. Windows, kitchens, floors, locks, fixtures, faucets, glass, well you get the picture. Check out their website at www. casadiez.com.gt . Monica will take good care of you and provide a complete package solution for the do-it-yourself shopper.

ASIAN TROPICS. This is more of your wicker, rustic wood, vase ornamental type of store with an ancient Asian/ Mayan twist. The colours and variety of the store is warm and flavourable. I have always loved these types of stores where you go in and everything is comfortable, intriguing, and in many ways you feel it would be a positive reflection of your personal good taste if it adorned your living space. ShopAholics beware! While shopping to decorate your home, you must be careful about to not overspend as it is like Xmas inside, you will just keep buying everything that catches your eye.

So chairs, tables, vases, benches, foot stools, planters, bamboo everything (a personal fav of mine), frames, décor nic naks, coverings, mirrors, dressers, bars, pillows, desks, and yes, decorating ideas, you will find this experience to be a pleasant discovery, one that can offer you a savings of time to provide you with the convenience of getting it all from one location and getting it home to make your newly purchased home warm and inviting. This store is certainly geared to the individual who wants to decorate their home quickly with positive touches that will offer warm vibes and karma.

You will find “Asian Tropics” on the second level of the Design Center and online at www. Asiantropics.net. Their social network page is https://www.facebook.com/pages/Asian-Tropics/121641737896171 .

If you are in the Antigua region and wish to visit any of the above places or others in Guatemala City we can provide you with a shuttle service to all the good spots and you can travel with or without security. Call 502-4769-8027.

Hola from Bamboo Group!

Mid 2012 is showing great signs of economic recovery. Europe and the USA seem to be embroiled in a mess of debt crisis but what the world does not acknowledge is Central America is debt free – most specifically in terms of the lack of credit debt the general public carries. The United States of America would be bragging all over the world if the roles were reversed. Central America is far too modest to peacock its feathers but it is something it should be very proud showing off.

Being debt free and at the tail end of a recession: prior events demonstrate this is the time to invest. Risk plays a role in investment strategies and you can debate for yourself if this is the moment you wish to take a piece of the action. Acquire land outside of Antigua. In what most Americans are calling the worse recession since the great depression, Antigua has not had a drop in property prices. It may have held firm, but it did not drop. Therefore you can consider Antigua the place you may wish to start. Now that property prices have held firm, the only way for them to go is up. Buy now, enjoy later.

Hey Investor!

Guess it is rain season again in Guatemala and time to focus on investments (as we wait for La Canicula to enjoy 2 weeks at the Beach and fun in the sun.) Until then lets take a look at what is new, hot, and offering , as Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys would say…

– This $60,000 usd 2 level home is extremely attractive aesthetically, functionally, and located within minutes of Antigua in a beautiful town called San Felipe. JUST POSTED TODAY… AR051 is a 2 level home with rooftop patio vista Hermosa de Antigua, 3 bdrm, with parking for 2 at $90,000 usd!

Rio Dulce is on our radar this month… a 7.25 Manzana property RD001 has a few cabanas that takes our breath away; and provides an on-your-mark-get-set-and-go opportunity for people wishing to create a small marina at the mouth of the Rio and some property development. You are minutes away from Livingston and some of the best eco-living in the world. As well, we have a great Eco-tourism location available for those who wish to invest in a self sustained Eco-Resort in the Rio hemisphere.

Ciudad Guatemala is hot! The primary zones Z09, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, CES, San Cristobal are excellent investment regions. Z1 and Z2 are also making a wonderful comeback now that 6a Avenida is car free and a pedestrian walkway. Z10001 is our newest property in the Zona Viva and a great consideration for people who want to have a future piece of earth in the rapidly changing landscape of the region. This home is located where apartment buildings are soaring up.

San Cristobal. We are offering 2 HOMES FOR THE PRICE OF 1. SC005 is ready to view at $96,000 usd. You can live in one unit and generate income from the other to pay down your mortgage. 3 bedrooms, kitchen, living room/dining room: Come and see this one asap as it wont last long!

Monterrico is Guatemala’s second favourite place to invest outside of Antigua. Now is the right time to place your money here. We have beachfront properties, Hotels, Restaurants, and condo concepts with rental incomes available for you. Ask us about investment options in the region. We have options starting at $70,000 usd!

Xela is Guatemala’s second largest city and offers one of the most beautiful historic centres in the country. Our team is looking for more properties so if you know of any please let us know. In the mean time check out this huge house for a small price tag Z3 XVCZ1001

GOD BLESS YOU

Semana Santa is over! Now we are spiritually cleansed and rested (oh yes, a week at the beach with family and friends gave us rest and relaxation.) Now, what was great in Guate-City was no traffic — EVEN AT 5PM!!! Also, gave us a chance to check out the city and have a great time at LOOPS a great place to go with the family for Roller-Skating, Go-Karts, Paintball, mini-putt, and more. Also, don’t forget the MUSEO DE LOS NINOS. If you haven’t been before, make a date and check ’em out. Guate-City also has a ZOO for a play day with all the family. Also, METRO BOWLING in Z15. I think we should organize a party and knock down a few pin(t)s. Those of you from Antigua can organize a bus. Stay the night and hang in Z10 Rattle n Hum or Z1 Reilly’s.

Now investment talk. The economy is picking up and the prices for real estate have remained stagnant and if not, decreased over the past few years. Trends have told us that coming out of a recession is the best time to invest for the best return on investments. Around Antigua we are seeking groups of investors with small bits of money ($15,000 usd each) to purchase chunks of lots together to build their own friend-ship communities. Talk to your friends about this. $15,000 usd can be paid off in the matter of a few years but the property can remain with you forever. Those of our upper middle class clients; we have a great property over looking San Juan del Obispo. A serious contender for a wise investment or developer. Image 1 level ranch homes around the edge of the property and 2 levels behind the ranch houses so each property gets a view overlooking Antigua.

Antigua and the surrounding areas are changing and the ‘old’ ways wont be so old into the future. Technology is changing the landscape of this country faster than anybody can imagine and one generation from now you wont be able to identify it. The old is old and the younger generation is changing the way business is done, the speed in which they are done, and the vibrancy of it all. Change is a scary thing but it is magical to watch it happen.

Please fill in the missing details below. We want you to be part of our vision, our investments, and our forward approach to where and how to make your investments. Investments are a serious game but should be enjoyed and taken advantage of in life. Beach property, Antigua Resort Living, and living well and comfortable in Guate-City. Now we are in Xela too!! We also have some regions we will be focusing on in the future. Come check them out.

Viewing the other side of Guate-life

Antigua, situated in the Department of Sacatepéquez, in Guatemala, Central America has a reputation for being a colonial hub-spot for the gateway to Central America.  Guatemala is also renowned for having coastal resort get-a-ways:  Included in this are the lake regions Amatitlan, Atitlan, along with Petén and others.  Mayan ruins of Tikal and El Mirador.  Don’t forget the East and West coasts where you can locate Rio Dulce and Monterrico respectfully.  There is that, and many more things to do and see.  But the part that escapes most visitors and those who spend years here is Guatemala City, or as affectionately called, La Capital.

Hanging around in the city

You see, La Capital gets a bad rap and most visitors only come to the town to stamp their passports or visit their Embassy.  They stay away from the city because they hear stories of crime and true, it does exist, but really it is kept to zones that are outside of the populous areas.  The main and central areas of Guatemala City, namely Zone 10 (popularly known as Zona Viva – “lively zone”) is a happening, attractive, and really cool place to visit and get to know.  Within the zone you will find around 9 square blocks of eateries, shopping, and yes, bars/ discothèques.  The size is pretty similar to the size of the ‘Casco of Antigua.’

In terms of crime in the Zona Viva area there is very standard amounts in comparison to any large urban areas of most metropolitan districts of the US or Canada not to mention European cities.  However, what you avoid from spending time here is the flavour that the city offers and we will touch on some of the great attractions this region of Guatemala City has to offer.  It is quickly becoming a safer area with the implementation of CCTVs or video surveillance cameras, criminals take notice of easy regions to work in and some areas of the city are becoming difficult to cause crime.

Spend a day

Within Zona Viva you have many types of activities to consider.  To begin with, you have Oakland Mall.  Oakland Mall is a Mecca of North American styled shopping.  Only 3 upper levels, it has a great selection of stores over any mall in the city for convenience, choice, and accessibility.  Plus a fair sized Cinepolis.  Spending an afternoon there to hang is a cool way to see the different side of Guatemala; for the back-packer scene.  Yeah, very “first world’ but this is the reason for the trip, to see different perspectives of the country.

Nokiate Plate em up

Now Zona Viva provides some of the best dining in the Country.  To begin with you have Nokiate or Tamarindos.  Both offer advanced fair in food presentation and taste.  Though higher on the “shi-shi pooh-pooh” stratosphere, they do cater to a clientele who enjoys lavishing their palate and with rates that would not cause a stir to any foreigner.  For the budgeting traveler, this would not be in your best interest.  Now the Kloster is your Fondue fair establishment.  Bring in your friends and share food and drink together.  Now some less known but certainly well deserved mentions are the following.

Kwahp khun kha – is the real authentic Thai food in the city.  Parking is ample, security on premise, and the food is super delicious.  The owners are down to earth and very wonderful to talk to and deliver a great quality of food preparation and taste.  Prices are excellent.

La Taberna del Griego Guatemala – Authentic taste of Greek Food here in Guatemala.  Very tasty Tzaziki, Souvlakis, and all on their menu.  Their potatoe fries are cooked with Olive Oil and you can sabour the taste!  You will love the food, the central location is easy to locate and find parking as well.  It is a great place to spend an afternoon.

Abbasi  – Authentic Indian Food.  Those from Antigua will know of them from 1st Avenida.  Well, you can have it as well in the city.  You will not find better in the city, if you can locate any at all.  It is comfortable, delicious, wonderful.

A great place to grab a grilled steak

Hacienda Real – Everybody will tell you, if you wish to treat yourself and a few friends to a GREAT steak dinner, you could do little better in life than finding yourself at Z10s Hacienda Real.  The atmosphere is bustling with a service force that is very professional, dedicated, and catering to your needs.  The food is served relatively quick and with zest, pride, quality, and consistency.  The ambience is a perfect Hacienda feel for the city folk who visit to bring back memories of being on the farm with friends.  You will find regular folk up to presidents dinning here… you are safe and secure, happy and well fed.

These would be certain treats and solid recommendations for any individual planning on making an early evening in the Zona Viva.  It would be safe to assume a 7ish entry to any of the aforementioned locations and departure around 10pm to visit a local bar or club.

This is where you go to beat out

Now once you plan on leaving your eatery, you will want to visit some swill-holes.  Now there is the ever-popular Rattle n Hum, and its sister bar, El Establo.  These cater mostly to the ex-pat and UN/ Embassy type of international people working in the city.  Esperanto’s and Go Deep are two opposite style bars that are side by side.  One is the Bohemian style bar, laid back; chill out and Che Guevara look a like’s.  Go Deep is the live music and pick up joint for more of the local / national fair.  Both great places to be and be seen.  The last of these places are the Retro Bar and those located around… the streets are darker and the places are more tougher around the edges… they are safe but you would want to travel in packs.  Now for those into the groove, dj wanna-be’s, and spinners alike, “The Box“; coolest little hang out joint that will give you the best till the end of the night.  These places are great, there are others, but I have only seen so many.

Now, within the Zona district you have some interesting places to visit in the afternoons.  One is the Design Center but stay tuned next week for our article to give you an idea of this great place to visit and explore while you are in our great city.
