Antigua Guatemala – The Good, the naughty, the ugly.

August was just damn too nice to work… well at least not full time. Walking the streets of Antigua has never been more charming in my 10 years of being in Guatemala. Postcard perfect weather, hustle and bustle of the rhythm of the town sent harmonic symphonies of peace on earth. Though we have lost La Casbah, a dear old friend, a new one has spurted in town, re-invented itself is more like it, Mario B of Johnnys Place in Monterrico has taken over the helm and transitioned it into a very sexy and beautiful place to be. Drop in and see the new and see the positive changes taking place.

Over these past 10 years I have seen a lot of development, changes, and improvements in the region. I have also experienced the living in and now around Antigua. Antigua is such a great charm that a person cannot help but have their heart stolen by the town. It is a colony of friendly people, foreigners who like me were swept off their feet and have made this their permanent or part time home, and visitors from all over the world who drop in for their tour of Central America, and lastly, and every town has them, the crooks and corruptos that swarm every living thing in life like parasites. The last type of people are those that we all have to put up with and really, just nod our head in disapproval and look the other way… those types are wasted breaths in life and their own Karma is what they will have to live with for the rest of their lives.

One of the locals who have made a great impact here in town and who should be given much credit is Jean-Louis Trombetta Wilson. He along with his partners created the much enjoyed sports bar Monoloco. Jean-Louis has also developed a clothing business, is partnered with an Eco Lodge called Earth Lodge, and is a photographer as well. JL is a focal point to our town and the main spokesman on behalf of the bars and restaurants in the region. He is the first to point out and pursue corruption that affects the town or country and does so without any consideration for his personal safety.

One of our full/ part time members at the core of Antigua is John Rexer, owner of the famous Café No Se, and

founder of one of the best Mezcals in the world, Ilegal Mezcal, and the backbone of La Cuadra Magazine. John has given this town a dive but much more than a dive, it is an artist attraction of qualified musicians, famous celebrities, and crazy parties. Every town needs a dive is their slogan and there is no confusion of the benefits John has delivered to this town. The bar made Ilegal Mezcal famous and in return the fame of the brand in the world is now making the town famous. Add to it the art and cultural benefits La Cuardra delivers to its readership is a blessing.

It is a sweet and sour experience to encounter foreigners in any resort town in the world. You meet a hundred strangers until you meet one that becomes a focal point in your life. I have met a solid handful in my years here and am still in touch and to those few, my friends, you find sharing stories from afar years after almost the same feelings and satisfaction as when you were together in person years before. The sour experience always is the farewell. Saying goodbye is the saddest moment in your friendship and it is one that strikes at the bottom of your heart. It is why you find recent arrivals to Antigua are those who become the most famous and know the most people. As the years go by it is rare to know as many new people, partly due to the tax of always having to go out (this is the breeding ground for tourism), partly due to having to say goodbye too many times.

As for the corruptos and the users of the town, there are many. Some of them acting as your friend, bar and hotel owners, a handful of locals, people in the municipality, and tourists alike. They feed-off of using others and they have no purpose and value in life. It is best to say that their Karma will overtake them in the future and they wont prosper spiritually but find their ambitions rot with time and lost trust from friends and those around them. If you know of anybody who uses people in this capacity you should keep clear of dealing with them, do not invite them to your table, nor nod to them on the street.

Antigua in its beauty prospers on the good that is made by those who are here. The Jeans and John’s create magic by sacrificing their time and energy. It is people like them that make this town a story book.

So next time there is a game on the screen, check it out at Monoloco. Seeking a bohemian dive, Café No Se. We will keep telling you of valued added locations in and around Antigua for you to check out for those of you who are new, for those who have been here for a long time, and for those of you seeking to rob and feed off of other people. You people will always be around and life cannot exist without parasites. Help spread the word of better living by supporting local businesses, Le Mercados of the region, Mom N Pop Shops, Organic suppliers, and businesses that are promoting a better lifestyle and honest dealings. There are good places to spend your money… check them out, enjoy yourself, and be safe.
